We are positive someone’s told you before how “optimizing your website will help you grow your business”. Let us assure you again, they weren’t liars. The right keywords, strategies, and techniques will make it easier for your customers to find you online.

It’s not an easy task, but if you want to give it a shot, here are a few things to keep in mind before optimizing your website.

Start with the WHO

We’re sorry to break it to you, but not everyone is your customer. Think about the personas in your field. The people who are truly interested in your business. See what their goals, wants, and needs are. Then, focus on designing an SEO strategy based on that.

Here’s an example: Let’s say you own a coffee shop. Think about the things your personas are searching for online (“Coffee shop near me” or “Best coffee in Long Beach”). Taking notice of what they’re searching will make it easier for your page to rank high. That’s why the practice of SEO is crucial for your business. SEO will help you reach those who are truly interested in your business.

Now, run your website through an auditor

Running your site through an auditor will allow you to see how your web page is doing over all internally. Although your website looks outstanding, it most likely has a lot of issues. Many website auditors allow you to see all your website’s visibility issues, META issues, content issues, link issues, and even image issues.

Focus on your content

Analyze your existing content. While preforming your analyzing, understand how your content fits the needs of your target market. Is it content they want to read? Are the ‘call to actions’ noticeable? Does your content communicate your business objectives, and goals?  Having the right content, in the right place will encourage consumers purchasing decisions.

Stare at your competition

Not really. But, do perform a good competitive analysis. A competitive analysis allows you to see what other’s are doing in the industry. Think about these few things:

  1. Where can you find your competition online?
  2. What kind of content are they sharing? Is it unique? How can you do it better?
  3. What keywords are they using? (notice which words are display constantly through their site.
  4. Here’s a tip to on finding competition. Let’s say you have an ice cream shop. Google search: Ice cream shop (that’s a keyword). Your competition online is not the ice cream shop a few blocks, down the street. Your competition are the ice cream shops that rank high on the search engine  result page.

While going through the analysis, pay attention to what’s working for them, what’s not working, and how can you make it better.
